Talk about one way to get rid of those pesky insects…that will leave you singing praises, literally. Put away the pesticide and crank up the stereo because the Mormon crickets are rolling into town and the one thing they can’t stand is neighbors that throw loud parties. Every year from May to August the residents Tuscarora, Nevada are witness to a massive parade, of sorts. The blood-red crickets hatch in April and march through the badlands in straight columns up to 3.2 km long. The year-round residents are less than thrilled to say the least about the newbies in the neighborhood. This year though they have a plan: rock ‘n’ roll music. The crickets are notorious fans of smooth jazz and classical, I hear.
Citizens will blast the rock tunes, which range from Led Zeppelin to the Rolling Stones for several days at a time all day long to keep the crickets off their land. Experts point out that it is probably the vibrations that keep the crickets at bay…we should thank Keith Richards for his thundering guitar riffs. Either way the “poison” seems to be working, but if you plan to visit Tuscarora anytime soon be prepared to get groovy to “Brown Sugar,” and tell those Mormon crickets to bugger off!
